CHAZY — A balance of determination, team spirit and joy filled the halls of Chazy Central Rural School for the annual Winter Weekend, a “Star Wars”-themed event this year.
The adventure began on Wednesday evening, with students and families attending open skate at the Scotts’ Rink. That was followed by a talent show, dodgeball and volleyball tournaments and other events that pitted classes against each other in friendly competition.
Chazy senior Noah Moak, an active participant in Winter Weekends since seventh grade, emphasized the importance of being loud at the gymnasium events.
“We get old water bottles and old water jugs and anything that makes noise… It shows a lot of our spirit,” Moak said.

Over the course of three days, grades seven through 12 competed against one another to see which class could rack up the most points in various activities, including a talent show, making papier mache sculptures, volleyball, dodgeball and more. The Lions Club has hosted the event over winter break for CCRS students for many decades.

Although it isn’t a mandatory event for students to attend, it is a great bonding experience for classes to have, he said.
Kelly McCauley, a Chazy alumna and parent, watched the volleyball and dodgeball games, cheering on teams, just as she once did when she attended the school.
The judges will “narrow down until there are two final teams,” she said of the tournaments. “The winner of the high school kids will take on the Lions Club.”
Chazy Lions Club has been sponsoring this event for decades, along with other community-based needs. Members of the Lions Club share a core belief in serving their community.
The final day of Winter Weekend started with students creating “Star Wars”-themed characters and memorable objects out of paper mache. Normally, students build snow sculptures near or on the school, but with no snow on the ground, plans had to change.
Barry West, Chazy alumnus and parent, reminisced about past years where students had to improvise when snow wasn’t available.
“There were a bunch of old stores around, and we painted their windows,” he said.
“Usually kids hope for snow because they like to be outdoors and do the snow sculptures. The public gets to see them better because they can drive around and they can actually see the finished product,” West said.
At a semi-formal dance ending this year’s event, seniors Austin Gravelle and Morgan Collins were crowned Winter Weekend king and queen.
The junior class won the overall championship.
